How to purchase a property in Portugal

  1. Obtain „numero de contribuinte“ (Tax number)
  2. Open a bank account (min. EUR 100 / approx. £ 65) *
  3. Contrato promessa de compra e venda (promissory contract) with a lawyer or legal adviser who checks the necessary documents.

In order to facilitate these various steps you can appoint your lawyer (or agent) who is likely to ask for a Power of Attorney (procuração) so that documents can be signed on your behalf after you have returned home.

* Since January 2006 you are obliged to bring more papers in order to arrange a bankaccount:
- last salary slip + declaration of employer. If you work independant you need to bring a copy of your last income and a copy from your inscription at the Chamber of Commerce (in European standard)
- statement of the sort of work you do
- birth certificate and certificate from your parents marriage
