Rivers and lakes

There's a lot of water to be found in this region: over twenty lakes, with little water recreation and hardly any motorboats at all. Santa Clara has the biggest lake and about a fifteen minutes drive from Santiago do Cacém you find the less-known but very beautiful Barragem (storage reservoir) of Campilhas.
One of the large rivers is the river Mira. The earlier mentioned beautiful tourist village Vila Nova de Milfontes is situated on the Mira estuary. From here it is possible to sail all the way to Odemira by canoe or boat. In the east the river Guadiana is also the border with Spain.
Along the riversides a lot of brightly coloured butterflies and dragonflies can be found. The otter still lives in the river Mira and he is known to occur only in very clean water! Turtles and snakes also live in the river and at night many other animals like the wild boar, the fox, the badger and the wildcat come to the river to drink. Fishermen are mainly to be found along the coast and they are great masters when it comes to finding the most impossible paths to their favourite fishing spots.
